Before it became host to numerous championship golf events, earned a string of award-winning accolades, and grew into a cherished home away from home for its members, Trump National Bedminster was the storied former estate of famed automaker John DeLorean.
Nestled in prestigious Somerset County, less than an hour from New York City, this distinguished property was once known as Lamington Farm. Purchased in 1917 by Morgan Cowperthwaite, an executive at a New York insurance brokerage firm, the estate soon became known as the Cowperthwaite place.

In 1981, the Cowperthwaite family sold the 535-acre estate to John Z. DeLorean the automaker who was famous for his winged-door car, as featured in the film, Back to the Future. The current Clubhouse at Trump National, a 1939 red brick Georgian Revival clubhouse built by renowned architect Mott B.Schmidt, was once DeLorean’s private home. In 1982, a year after the sale, John DeLorean sold the property at a bankruptcy auction in 2000, and when the investors ran out of funds while working on the site, the Trump Organization purchased the property in 2002.
After a multi-million dollar renovation that included the development of two 18-hole world-renowned golf courses, Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster quickly ascended to the top tier of the golf world, hosting a legacy of championship play that includes the 2009 USGA Junior Amateur Championship, the 2014 MET Open Championship, the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2022 and 2023 LIV Golf Invitational, and the highly anticipated upcoming LIV Golf New York event — cementing Trump Bedminster’s place among the world’s premier championship venues.
