In 1981, the Cowperthwaite family sold the 535-acre estate to John Z. DeLorean the automaker who was famous for his winged-door car, as featured in the film, Back to the Future. The current Clubhouse at Trump National, a 1939 red brick Georgian Revival clubhouse built by renowned architect, Mott B.Schmidt, was once DeLorean's private home. In 1982, a year after the sale, John DeLorean sold the property at a bankruptcy auction in 2000, and when the investors ran out of funds while working on the site, the Trump Organization purchased the property in 2002.
