Ice House Just Off the Putting Green at Trump International Golf Links, Aberdeen

Did you know that there is an ancient ice house at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland? We thank Vic Henderson, now aged 88, and who has worked his entire life at the Menie Estate (now known as the MacLeod House & Lodge in Aberdeenshire, Scotland) for his help with this story:

Vic Henderson recalls stories told by his grandmother of when his family fished for salmon and sea trout out of the Menie Fishing Station – situated on what is now the putting green at Trump Aberdeen. Vic’s grandmother was born in the late 1800s and when she was a girl, the Great Dunes that exist today on the course were still in their infancy.  Vic tells us that the land was relatively flat leading right down to the sea edge – very different to the current landscape.

People have fished on the Menie Estate for hundreds of years and this is evident by the presence of an Ice House located just off our 9th green. Ice houses were used by fishermen to store and freeze their catch before it was collected by horse and cart and taken to market. However, for the Menie Estate fishermen, some of the fish were sent to ‘The Big House’ – now known as MacLeod House – to be used in the kitchens of the resident Laird.

The Ice House is a brick built structure up to 10 feet deep – ice was shoveled in via a small opening but there was also a tunnel leading into the main dome that allowed the fishermen to walk in and load their catch. The south side of the Ice House was built up to ensure that the sun didn’t warm the ice and cause it to melt thereby ruining the fish.

The Ice House is a historic feature of the Estate and a great testament to those who lived and worked on the land in years gone by. We encourage all visitors to take a look and find Vic, who is always keen to share a story or two!
