Subterranean Vaults Located at 40 Wall Street, Also Known as The Trump Building

The vaults at 40 Wall Street, which were the largest vaults in the world when constructed, were built by Manhattan Company which later merged to form the Chase Manhattan Bank and J.P. Morgan Chase. They held gold reserves of the nation’s largest companies and the world’s wealthiest individuals through WWII and beyond. These six vaults, which are up to two stories in height, were erected prior to the completion of the building, and the vaults are set into the bedrock foundations, making them completely impenetrable.

Completed in 1930, this 72-story skyscraper was the world’s tallest building until surpassed by the Chrysler Building, when Chrysler revealed the spire they had hidden inside the building’s top, and then both were surpassed by the Empire State Building. Donald J. Trump bought and restored 40 Wall Street in 1995, now known as The Trump Building, and in 1998 it was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Committee.
