The Famous Turnberry Lighthouse is More Than a Beacon of Light

Several Trump properties possess a trait (or two) of which you might not have been aware. These traits are what we consider Trump Treasures, the stories and legends that contribute to the extraordinary sense of place and ambiance at our destinations around the world.

For Trump Turnberry, this story begins with a castle, a king, and a lighthouse. Sounds like a fairytale, and if you’ve been to Turnberry, Scotland, you’ll probably agree. In addition to a spectacular setting on the enchanting Ayrshire coast, Trump Turnberry provides history buffs with facts and stories galore.

Sitting on one of the most majestic pieces of land anywhere in the world, Turnberry Castle dates back to the 11th Century. Turnberry means “the castle built on the stormy sharp rocky promontory.”  Robert the Bruce, crowned King of Scotland in 1306, was born in Turnberry Castle. In 1307, Bruce launched the fight to rid Scotland of the English from nearby Arran by retaking Turnberry Castle.

Centuries later, Thomas and David Stevenson, father and son of the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson, recommended that a great lighthouse be built at Turnberry Point. It was built in 1873 and remains powerful and strong to this date! Turnberry Lighthouse made the area safer which, because of its powerful winds and waters, was responsible for many shipwrecks and deaths.

In 1892, a proposal for an 18-hole course at Turnberry was put forward. In June of 2014, the Trump Organization purchased the entire Turnberry Resort and completely restored the Great Lighthouse into the world’s finest and most spectacular Halfway House and Lighthouse Suite, which opened for business in 2016.

Today, this stunning Scotland destination continues to offer breathtaking views across the Irish sea to the Isle of Arran and beyond. With a large and lavishly furnished living room, extensive private terrace, and two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and terrace access, the Turnberry Lighthouse stands today as both a legendary beacon and a magnificent luxury Scottish cottage.
