The Trump Organization Announces Record-Setting Sale of Trump International Hotel, Washington D.C.

The Trump Organization announced today the record-breaking sale of the Trump International Hotel, Washington D.C. to CGI Merchant Group, who will rebrand the hotel as a Waldorf Astoria. The transaction, which closed today, marks the highest price per key ever achieved in Washington D.C., the highest price per key in U.S. history for a leasehold interest, and the largest sale of a historic hotel in over 15 years.

“The sale of Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C. is a fantastic outcome for all parties,” said Lawrence Wolfe, Vice Chairman and Co-Head of Lodging for Newmark, who exclusively represented The Trump Organization. “This transaction breaks every record in our nation’s capital and represents the largest sale by both total dollars and price per key of any U.S. urban hotel in years.

Trump International Hotel, Washington D.C. has become one of the most iconic hotels anywhere in the world.  In 2012, The Trump Organization was selected by the General Services Administration to redevelop the property in one of the most competitive selection processes in the history of the agency.  Over twenty of the top hotel companies in the world bid on the project, and The Trump Organization was awarded the job based on the strength of the Trump development team, financial wherewithal, vision for the property, and dedication to the preservation of the historic structure.

In just three years, The Trump Organization’s development team transformed the Old Post Office, and under their leadership, the property received the coveted Forbes “Five-Star” designation, making it the only Forbes Five-Star Hotel in all of downtown Washington D.C. and in 2022 became the only hotel in all of Washington D.C. with a Five-Star Hotel and Spa. The Hotel was also awarded several Trip Advisor Awards, including "Number 1 Hotel in Washington D.C." (2021 - 2022), “Top 25 Hotels in the United States” 2020 (#3), 2021 (#2), “Top 25 Luxury Hotels in the United States” 2020 (#2), 2019 (#4), “Top Hotels in Washington D.C.” by Condé Nast Traveler (2017-2020), U.S. News & World Report “Best Hotels in the USA” Gold Badge Winner (2018-2021), Stella Award Winner for Meetings and Service Excellence (2020 - 2021) and many others.  The Hotel’s success is a true testament to the Trump brand and its unwavering commitment to excellence.

“As a family, it has been an honor and a privilege to redevelop the Nation’s Old Post Office,” said Eric Trump. “We took a dilapidated and underutilized government building and transformed it into one of the most iconic hotels in the world.  We are incredibly proud of what we accomplished, and we wish Waldorf Astoria, Raoul Thomas, and the team at CGI, tremendous success in the years to come.”
