The Shebeen at Trump Doonbeg, Passing On Generations of Irish Traditions

The Healy House, also known as the Shebeen at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Doonbeg, is an original stone cottage where generations of the Healy Family were reared. Records show that as many as 12 children shared the house with parents and often prized animals, in what was originally a humble 3 room house. Locals recall a home full of joy and love and often great celebrations in the form of storytelling, songs and traditional Irish music.

It was in these wonderful and neighborly get-togethers of bygone years, that traditions were passed down from generation to generation. Stories and songs were preserved, often enriched, maybe even exaggerated but always entertaining. On evenings of good weather, people could be found dancing at the crossroads. This tradition of open-air dancing originates sometime before the great famine in Ireland (1845-52). These were informal affairs and would have involved ceili music, similar to what can be heard in traditional music circles today.

Throughout the 19th century and into the middle of the 20th century, dancing at the crossroads was one of the most popular forms of summer entertainment everywhere in Ireland. However, with the rise of formal dancing venues such as ballrooms in the 1930s and 1940s, dancing at the crossroads became less frequent.

The Healy Family lived here until the early 1900s and the traditions that they and their neighbors shared have been brought back to life in this space, steeped in history, through the guise of the Irish Experience in the Shebeen at Doonbeg. A perfect location for celebrations or get-togethers with friends and family while staying at Trump Doonbeg, the Irish Experience includes a two-hour presentation of traditional Irish entertainment in story, song and dance led by a host, the Fear an Ti (man of the house), who prepares traditional Irish stew along with select Irish drinks while regaling guests with stories of times gone by.

In concluding this enchanted Trump fable, we'd like to share an Irish blessing in both English and its original Gaelic form, which was provided courtesy of our team at Doonbeg, who we are incredibly thankful to have as part of our Trump Team worldwide!

May the road rise to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

The rains fall soft upon your fields

And until we meet again

May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

In The Original Gaelic Form:

Go n-éirí an bóthar leat

Go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl

Go lonraí an ghrian go te ar d’aghaidh

Go dtite an bháisteach go mín ar do pháirceanna

Agus go mbuailimid le chéile arís,

Go gcoinní Dia i mbos A láimhe thú
